Leaders face challenging times, with the Great Resignation impacting many of them. They are making changes to adjust to the present and changing leadership habits. The year 2022 seems to be continuing the same theme, with prevalent uncertainty and anxiety. The problem is that the old process of working through the stress is making it worse. Much that needs to change is lacking empathy, which causes employees to be unhappy. Take a look at some of the positive leadership changes you can make.

1. Keep the Camera on

People often take video calls without their cameras on. They may say they have a messy background, or they could have technical issues. The problem is that you can’t connect the same way when the calls are audio-only. Nonverbal cues and body language are part of communication, and none of this is conveyed when you have the camera off. Instead, create a new habit that you leave your video on and require it of all participants. It makes everyone feel more connected.

2. Get Personal From Time to Time

When working from home, you no longer run into coworkers in the hallways. You can end up losing your connection to them. There is no digital alternative yet, but you may need to figure out how to make time to check in during Zoon meetings. It is essential for leaders, but employees need opportunities to meet and build rapport.

Take the time to change the format of your meetings. Give people the first 10 to 15 minutes for a personal talk. Ask good questions so that people share and share about what you are doing as well. You can also schedule Happy Hours or other social gatherings virtually, which can help keep connections alive.

3. Stay Open-Minded About the Future

When the pandemic arrived, it was expected to be a temporary situation. Nobody knew how having people work from home would work out. However, it turned out that people were more productive than expected. Now, many companies are considering continuing in this way. Some leaders have a lease coming up, and they aren’t sure whether they need to renew it. Discuss it with employees and keep an open mind about the future.
